About the program
The Adopt a Street program is a community initiative where volunteers take responsibility to clean and maintain a designated area of Brooklyn Park.
Who can participate?
Anyone! The program is open to individuals, families, neighborhood groups, community organizations, and businesses in Brooklyn Park.
Safety tips
A roadway can be a dangerous place to be. Every group member should be mentally alert, have a sense of responsibility for the safety of themselves and others.
Wear the right gear
- Heavy gloves
- Heavy leather shoes or boots
- Light colored clothing and a brightly colored cap
- Hat and long sleeves for sunburn
- Sunscreen and insect or tick repellent
- High-visibility vests (provided by the city)
Stay safe on the road
- Assure traffic control signs are set out during the cleanup and returned afterward
- Park vehicles off roadway
- Carpool to the pickup site to reduce the number of vehicles on site
- Stay in the right of way
- Work facing traffic and never turn your back to oncoming cars
- Supervise and and all children who are participating in the cleanup
- Watch your footing
- Be careful on steep slopes, trenches, or other types of drop-offs
- Avoid using headsets
- Stay clear of any construction
- Do not pick up items on bridges, tunnels, or an overpass
- Be alert for wildlife
- Work on one side of the road at a time
Stay healthy
- Do not remove anything that could be hazardous to your health like needles, syringes, jagged glass, animal feces, etc.
- Carry a first aid kit
- Be aware of the nearest hospital, in case of an emergency
- Drink plenty of water but avoid overhydration
- Keep a list of any allergies volunteers may have
- After cleanup, remove all collected material
