Run for City Council

Council members serve a four-year term.

Election process

If more than two residents file to be elected as mayor or council member for each district, a city primary election will be held to nominate candidates for the city’s general election.

Requirements to be a candidate

  • You must be a United States citizen
  • You must be eligible to vote in Minnesota
  • You must be twenty-one years of age or older upon assuming office
  • You must live in Brooklyn Park for at least 30 days before the election

Do candidates have to declare a political party?

Municipal offices are non-partisan offices.

Filing to become a candidate

Candidate packets with the required forms are available in the City Clerk’s office at City Hall seven days before the filing dates.

For mayor

  • You must file an Affidavit of Candidacy with the city clerk.
  • You must have a petition signed by 75 registered voters who live in the city
    • Signatures can only be obtained during the filing dates
  • You must pay a $75 filing fee in accordance with Section 4.06 of the City Charter

For council member

  • You must file an Affidavit of Candidacy with the city clerk.
  • You must have a petition signed by 25 registered voters who live in your representative district
    • Signatures can only be obtained during the filing dates: Friday, May 21 – Tuesday, June 4, 2024
  • You must pay a $25 filing fee in accordance with Section 4.06 of the City Charter

Withdrawing from an election

To withdraw from an election, a candidate has to file an Affidavit of Withdrawal with the City Clerk. A candidate has until 5 p.m. two days after candidacy filing period to withdraw. After that date, candidates cannot file an affidavit of withdrawal. (MS205.13, subd. 6).

What are campaign financial reports?

Campaign financial reporting is governed by Minnesota Statutes 383B. If a candidate receives contributions or makes disbursements, an initial report must be filed within 14 days of receiving or making the disbursement. Candidates file their financial reports to Hennepin County.

What are statements of economic interest?

Per the City Charter and MS10A.09, all city-elected officers and employees having authority to make major decisions regarding the expenditure or investment of public money must file a statement of economic interest form.
