Safe Routes to School
The City of Brooklyn park recently received a Safe Routes to School grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to install five sidewalk segments in the Park Brook neighborhood near Park Brook Elementary School.
The planned sidewalks will enhance the safety of school children walking and biking to and from Park Brook Elementary School. This project includes sidewalks and trails in areas identified in Brooklyn Park’s 2015 Pedestrian and Bike Plan, the 2022 Safe Routes to School Plan and the Blue Line Extension LRT Station Area Master Plans. These plans all involved substantial community engagement.

TH 252/I-94 Environmental Review Project
The Highway 252/I-94 Project will improve safety and move people and goods reliably using varying modes (cars, trucks, transit, walking, biking, etc.) between Highway 610 on the North in Brooklyn Park and 4th Street on the south in Minneapolis. There are many corridor users who have varied ideas, interests, and goals for the corridor. A variety of studies have evaluated the needs of this corridor leading up to today, including:
- 2014-2016 Brooklyn Center TH 252 Study
- 2017 Met Council Principal Arterial Intersection Conversion Study
- 2018 MNDOT MnPASS System Study Phase 3
- 2017-2020 Hennepin County Highway 252/I-94 Environmental Assessment
MnDOT and Federal Highway Administration determined an EIS was needed for the project near the end of the Environmental Assessment process. Transitioning to an EIS allows for further review and analysis of Transit facilities on the corridor and additional alternatives to be analyzed in greater detail. The Final Scoping Decision Document was completed in November 2023. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement will start in May of 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2026. The Final EIS and record of decision is projected to be completed in 2026/2027. Design plans would then be prepared and right of way acquired in 2027/2028. The current expectation for project reconstruction start is 2028/2029.
Brookdale Drive Pond Excavation
Brooklyn Park is performing maintenance on the storm sewer system by excavating the material that has been deposited in the basin northeast of Brookdale Dr and Upton Ave. This will provide additional storage in the basin that has accumulated sediment over the past 50 years.
