Eligible residents who want to become a candidate for West District Council Member must file an Affidavit of Candidacy and Nominating Petition with the City Clerk.
Affidavits of Candidacy and Nominating Petitions are being accepted NOW through Tuesday, February 28 at 5 p.m. Voting will be held on May 9.
The Council Member will fill an unexpired term, such term to expire January 1, 2025. If more than two residents file to be elected as Council Member, a special primary election will be held on May 9, 2023, to nominate candidates for the August 8, 2023, special election.

How to file
An Affidavit of Candidacy, a $25 filing fee and nominating petitions signed by 25 registered voters from the representative district is required.
All candidates must file in the City Clerk’s Office (City Hall, 5200 85th Avenue North). Candidate packets are now available at the Customer Service Desk.
Note: Nominating Petitions must be signed during the filing period of February 14, 2023 to February 28, 2023 and be signed by registered voters who live in the city of Brooklyn Park. Signatures must only appear on the Nomination Petition Form.

Qualifications for candidacy
You can obtain and file an affidavit of candidacy through the City Clerk. An affidavit of candidacy states the name of the office and that the candidate:
- Is an eligible voter*;
- Has no other affidavit on file as a candidate for any office at the upcoming primary or general election
- Is already 21 years old or more, or will be when assuming office
- Has been a resident of Brooklyn Park for at least 30 days before the general election
*eligible voter as defined in MS 201.014, subd. 1 is an individual who meets the following requirements at the time of election:
- be 18 years of age or older
- be a citizen of the United States
- maintain residence in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding the election
Withdrawal from election
A candidate may withdraw from the election by filing an affidavit of withdrawal with the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. March 2, 2023. Thereafter, no candidate may file an affidavit of withdrawal. (MS205.13, subd. 6).
