Where do I vote?

Your polling place may have changed since the last election. You must vote at the polling place assigned to the precinct in which you live. There are 24 precinct polling places in Brooklyn Park.

When are polling places open?

On Election Day, polling places will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

How do I register to vote?

To be eligible to vote in Minnesota you must

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • Have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • Maintain residence at the address given on the registration form

You are not eligible to vote if:

  • You are under court-ordered guardianship in which there is a court order revoking your right to vote
  • You have been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote
  • You have any felony conviction record without having your civil rights restored. If you have a question on the status of a prior felony conviction, you should contact your probation officer to gain clarification and resolve your status question before completing a voter registration application.

Giving false information on your voter registration application is a felony punishable by not more than five years imprisonment or a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.

You must re-register if:

  • You have moved to a different address (even if to a different unit at the same address).
  • Changed your name
  • Have not voted at least once within the last four years


In Minnesota, you can pre-register at least 20 days before Election Day. After the 20-day deadline, you must register on Election Day.

Mail or drop off your voter registration paper application to City Hall, Attn: Elections or the Hennepin County Election Division.

Once you are registered, you will receive a postcard with information about where you vote on Election Day and your name will appear on the list of pre-registered voters at your polling place.

Election Day registration

If you miss the pre-registration deadline (20 days before each election), you can still register to vote on Election Day at your polling place. You are required to provide certain acceptable forms of identification to prove your eligibility when registering on Election Day.

Requirements for Election Day registration

You must have one of the following to verify your residence:

  • A valid Minnesota driver’s license, learner’s permit, Minnesota ID card or receipt for any of these containing a valid address in the precinct
  • A Tribal ID card that contains your name, signature and address in the precinct
  • A valid registration in the same precinct under a different name or address
  • A notice of late registration that was sent to you from your county auditor
  • A voter registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with a signed oath
  • An authorized employee of a residential facility where you reside who can confirm your address (the residential facility must provide a list of employees to election officials)
  • A valid student ID card including your photo, if your college has provided a student housing list to election officials


Voters may register by a combination of one picture ID from Column 1 AND one type of bill from Column 2.

The ID can be expired, and the document can also be shown electronically on a device (smart phone, etc.)

  • Approved photo ID’s must contain the voter’s name and photo. It may contain the voter’s old address or have no address.
    • Driver’s license, state ID card or learner’s permit issued by any state
    • U.S. Military ID
    • Tribal ID card with the name, signature and photo of the voter
    • U.S. Passport
    • Minnesota university, college or technical college ID card
    • Minnesota high school ID card
  • Eligible original bills including account statements and start of service notifications, dated or due date is 30 days before or after the election, must contain current name and address in the precinct.
    • Television, cable, satellite
    • Internet provider
    • Electric / gas
    • Telephone (cell, landlines, VOIP)
    • Credit card or banking services
    • Bills for rent or mortgage statements
    • Garbage or solid waste
    • Water/sewer
  • Residential lease or rental agreement if valid through Election Day
  • Current student fee statement

Student registration

If you are a student living at school, you can choose whether to register at home or at school but not both! You can vote by absentee ballot, but be sure you have the proper information and identification.
