SUMMARY:Special City Council Meeting: 2022 Truth in Taxation
DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Park City Council will hold a public hearing on its 2023 budget and on the amount of property taxes it is proposing to collect to pay for the costs of services the city will provide in 2023. All Brooklyn Park residents are invited to attend the public hearing of the City Council to express their opinions on the budget and on the proposed amount of property taxes. The hearing will be held on: \nMonday\, December 5\, 2022 at 6 p.m.\nBrooklyn Park City Hall\n5200 85th Ave N\, Brooklyn Park\, MN \nIf the discussion of the budget cannot be completed\, a time and place for continuing the discussion will be announced at the hearing. \nSubmit your comments \nIf you are not able to attend the public hearing to express your opinions\, you can also submit your comments: \n\nonline using this form\nby email at bpfinance@brooklynpark.org\nby mailing them to the City Clerk’s office\n\nCity of Brooklyn Park\, City Clerk’s Office\n5200 85th Ave. N.\, Brooklyn Park\, MN 55443\n\n\n\nWhat is Truth in Taxation? \n“Truth in Taxation” (TnT) is a process first enacted by the legislature in 1988 to enhance public participation in Minnesota’s property tax system. You can read more about Truth in Taxation here. \nThe TnT process consists of these three components: \n\nEach local government is required to formally adopt a “proposed levy” in September for the upcoming year; the final levy\, when ultimately adopted\, may not exceed the proposed levy.\nCounty auditors generate parcel-specific notices of proposed taxes for all parcels of property based on the proposed levies.\nEach local government is required to hold a public meeting after the notices come out where budget and tax issues are discussed\, and where public testimony must be allowed\, prior to adopting its final levy.\n\nTnT has a goal of improving accountability by focusing taxpayers on the relationship between budget decisions and property taxes\, and providing taxpayers with a greater opportunity to become involved in the local government budgeting process.
