Mayor-elect Lisa Jacobson will be sworn into office on Monday, August 30, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the City Council Chambers inside City Hall, 5200 85th Avenue North. Immediately following the swearing-in ceremony, a community celebration will take place in the Gardenview room at the Community Activity Center, 5600 85th Avenue North.

Election Updates

August 23

Lisa Jacobson will be the next Mayor of Brooklyn Park. The City Council certified the results of the August 10 special election for Mayor at the Council meeting on August 23. The Council, in its role as the Board of Certification, reviewed seven challenged ballots from the recount and certified the recount results, with the results showing Jacobson being elected by a two-vote margin over Hollies Winston.

August 19

Results from the recount of the special election for Mayor of Brooklyn Park show Lisa Jacobson with a two-vote margin over Hollies Winston.

Five ballots have been challenged by Winston and two ballots have been challenged by Jacobson. Challenges will be presented to the City Council at a special meeting at 6:00 on Monday, August 23, 2021, in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 5200 85th Avenue N. The Council, in its role as the Board of Certification will make a determination on the ballots and certify the results.

The special council meeting will be broadcast live on CCX Media Channel 16 and livestreamed.

August 16

A recount of the Special Election results of the Mayor’s office will be conducted in the Gardenview room at the Community Activity Center, 5600 85th Ave North on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 9 a.m. This recount is open to the public.

The Council will certify the election results at their special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021.

The new mayor will be sworn in at a special ceremony on Monday, August 30. Details to be announced.

August 12

There will be a Special City Council Meeting on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall to canvass the results of the special election. 

A losing candidate for election to a municipal office may request a publicly funded recount of the votes cast if the difference between the votes cast for that candidate and the winning candidate is less than one-half of one percent of the total votes if there are more than 400 but less than 50,000 votes cast for the office. (MS 204C.35, subd.1). This total falls within those parameters.

Written requests are required for all recounts. The request should include the office for which the recount is requested and must be filed with the City Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on August 20, 2021.

Within 24 hours after determining that a publicly funded recount is requested, the City Clerk, in charge of the recount will send a notice to the candidates for the office to be recounted and to the Hennepin County Auditor. The notice will include the date, starting time, location of the recount, the office to be recounted, and the name of the official performing the recount. The recount will be open to the public.
