About our department

The Fire Department is an innovative and diverse organization with 25 full-time and 31 paid-on-call firefighter/EMTs. We currently operate from 4 fire stations, 3 of which are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All of our firefighters are state certified and are also registered emergency medical technicians. The department responds to more than 9,000 calls for service each year.

Fire Department's strategic plan

In 2018, the Brooklyn Park City Council authorized the Fire Department to launch a strategic planning initiative. Strategic planning is an intentional process by which an agency or organization surveys the industry trends: the customer’s needs and wants; the current and future available resources; and the current and future capabilities of the agency to determine performance gaps.

A team of thirty-two members of the Brooklyn Park Fire Department and external stakeholders from the community met for a two-day planning process in March, 2018. The stakeholders were tasked with providing input and feedback throughout the planning process as advocates from the sub-groups they were asked to represent.

At the conclusion of the process, the stakeholders derived three key themes:

  1. How do we continue to improve on saving lives during emergency events?
  2. How do we meet the increasing service demands over the coming years?
  3. How do we better market our services and demonstrate our value to our community?

From these key themes, members of the agency’s command staff developed a list of nine strategic objectives, 21 outcome measurements and 31 supporting goals to prepare the Brooklyn Park Fire Department to meet the needs and expectations of their community and remain a “value-added” organization into the future.

While the consultant worked to finalize the strategic plan, the Fire Chief and members of the Fire Department’s leadership team began work on an 18-month operational plan based on the strategic objectives, outcome measurements, and supporting goals in the draft strategic plan.  The final version of the strategic plan was presented to the City Council on May 28, 2019, as well as the 18-month operational plan.

Fire Department's mission

Our department values

One of the most basic tenants of firefighting and a characteristic of almost all firefighters is the willingness to risk your well-being to help a total stranger. This, in itself, is honorable; but honor from the firefighter's perspective is different. To us, it means respecting ourselves, each other, our equipment, and most of all, the people we serve. It means upholding the nobility and dignity of our profession by maintaining the highest moral character at all times, and making sure that every interaction with the public exudes professionalism, care and compassion. Honor is built from the hard work, sacrifice, dedication and commitment we give to the fire department every day.

To fulfill our mission statement requires highly trained, motivated and committed firefighters. Our expectations of you as a member of this organization will be high and if you meet those expectations, your rewards will be equally great. We expect our firefighters to have the internal motivation to achieve their goals and challenge themselves to constantly learn and master new skills.

There is perhaps no more recognizable image of trust, unselfishness and reliability than that of the firefighter. We respond to calls for help on people's worst day, without a moment of hesitation, knowing that our actions may mean the difference between life and death. We show respect to the profession and those who have fallen in the line of duty through patriotism, honesty and honoring the traditions of firefighting.

Service to others

Training. Physical fitness. Education. Everything we do as firefighters prepares us to respond to an unthinkable number of emergency situations with safety and efficiency. Not everyone is willing to get out of bed at four o'clock in the morning during a Minnesota blizzard to help someone they don't even know. To do this takes personal strength, character and commitment. And in most cases you won't even receive a "thank you." But the feeling you get inside, knowing you served as part of a team that may have saved someone's life or their possessions is beyond compare.

Our organization shines as each and every member practices these values.
