Recreation and Parks Advisory Commission meeting CANCELLED

The City of Brooklyn Park has declared a snow emergency, effective at 9 a.m. WEDNESDAY, Feb. 20.

Campaign Signs

This information is a summary of city and state laws regulating the construction and display of campaign signs in Brooklyn Park.

We realize candidates for public office cannot entirely control the political efforts of supporters or opponents. However, candidates may be able to significantly influence their supporters and others to be compliant with these laws.

Remember, prevention is always the best practice. Thank you for your cooperation.

When can signs be posted?

Signs can be posted 46 days before the primary election until ten days after the general election (June 29 to November 16, 2018).

Location restrictions

  • Signs cannot be placed within the boulevard, right-of-way or inside the clear view triangle (see illustration below).
  • Signs cannot be placed on any right-of-way of the interstate system of highways or where access can only be obtained from an interstate
  • Signs cannot be located on city-owned property, such as parks and trails, city hall, police or fire stations, community activity centers, etc.
  • Signs cannot be placed on private land without the permission of the owner or occupant
  • Signs may not be displayed within 100 feet of a polling place during Election Day
  • Signs cannot be attached to:
    • Trees
    • Fences
    • Utility poles
    • Or other such permanent supports, not specifically intended as sign structures
  • Signs may not exceed twelve (12) feet above grade.
  • Roof signs that are installed above the building façade or twelve feet above grade

Size and number

  • Minnesota Statutes do not allow a city to restrict the sizes or numbers of campaign signs.
  • Signs cannot confuse, obstruct or interfere with traffic signs
  • Signs cannot resemble, hide or interfere with an official traffic control device, sign, or signal, or railroad sign or signal
  • Signs cannot obstruct or interfere with the driver’s view of approaching, merging, or intersecting traffic for a distance of 500 feet
  • Signs may not create traffic obstructions or other health or safety hazards.

Content not allowed on signs

  • Signs cannot prominently display the word “stop” or “danger”
  • Signs cannot contains statements, words, or pictures of an obscene, indecent, or immoral character, or such as would offend public morals or decency

Types of signs not allowed

  • Motion signs
  • Signs that have flashing or moving lights that could be a traffic hazard
  • Projecting signs
  • Signs painted directly on building walls
  • Signs painted or drawn on rocks or natural features
  • Signs that have more than two faces
  • Signs that are structurally unsafe, in disrepair, or are abandoned

Enforcement of regulations

  • City staff will respond to complaints regarding campaign sign violations. If a sign violation is confirmed, staff will take a photo and contact the candidate with 24 hours to relocate and or remove the sign.
  • Repeat sign violations or signs constituting an immediate safety hazard (e.g. blocking visibility) will be removed immediately.
  • All signs taken by staff will be stored at City Hall.
