The assessor's duties:
The City Assessor and staff are responsible for setting the value of all property within Brooklyn Park to determine the taxable value of real property, upon which property taxes are levied for taxing jurisdictions.
The State of Minnesota requires that the values set by the assessor represent 100% of market value. Simply stated, market value is the usual selling price of a property exposed for sale on the open market with an arm's length transaction between a knowledgeable, willing buyer and seller.
It is the assessor's responsibility to provide uniform property values so that the burden of taxes is distributed as fairly and equitably as possible under current law.
The main functions of the assessor's office include:
- Update information in the property database.
- Inspect and review all existing properties within the city at least once every five years.
- Inspect and reviewing all properties that were issued permits for the current year and any partial assessments from prior years.
- Provide value and ownership information to citizens, developers, real estate professionals and other interested parties.
- Annually send current valuation notices to all property owners (in March or April). At this time we review concerns of the public who wish to contest the valuation set by the assessor's office. If the issue cannot be resolved, there is an opportunity to contest the value to the Board of Review.
The assessing office does not handle special assessments. All inquiries on special assessments should be directed to the Engineering Division.
