What Is A Duty Crew?

When the Brooklyn Park Fire Department was formed in 1957, it was an all-volunteer department.  Over the years, that concept has evolved into the duty crew fire department we are today.  This concept is shared by a large number of fire departments throughout the United States.
The duty crew model is an organizational variation of the paid-on-call system.  Firefighters are able to schedule their time staffing one or two fire stations with three-person crews 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
Firefighters sign up each month to work shifts.  Shift times and lengths vary by day of the week.  Shifts can be anywhere from 3 hours to 9 hours long and Firefighters are paid an hourly rate
Off-duty Firefighters also respond when they are paged, typically for structure fires and when the duty crews are unavailable to answer a call.  Firefighters are paid for the calls they respond to.
We are one of the busiest non-full-time fire departments in Minnesota.  We respond to approximately 5200 calls per year.
We provide a value for our residents.

We are not volunteer Firefighters, nor are we full-time Firefighters.
