Suggested guidelines to follow when hiring a building contractor
Hire a licensed contractor - most residential builders, remodelers and roofers are required to be licensed by the state. You may contact the Department of Commerce (651-296-6319) to verify a contractor's license or to check for any unresolved complaints against a particular contractor.
Contact the Better Business Bureau - they also may be able to tell you if any complaints have been filed against a particular contractor.
Ask the contractor for references - contact former customers and ask if they were satisfied with the contractor's work or if they encountered any problems.
Ask the contractor how long they have been in business.
Make sure the contractor has obtained proper permits - For most building projects the contractor must obtain building permits or zoning approval before beginning the work. Contact the Brooklyn Park Building Department at 763-315-8405 to check on permit status.
Avoid contractors who:
-
Only provide a post office box for their business address.
-
Engage in high pressure sales tactics.
-
Refuse to give written estimates on contracts.
-
Fail to obtain proper permits or request the homeowner obtain them.
-
Refuse to provide their contractor license number.
-
Require full or substantial payment before work begins.
-
Have done business under multiple names.
Before you sign a contract:

The contract should be in writing.
