In 1997 the police department purchased a Speed Monitoring Awareness Trailer or S.M.A.R.T trailer. The intent of the S.M.A.R.T trailer was to provide a passive enforcement reminder as a component of the speed reduction project. The trailer is typically placed on more frequently traveled residential streets such as Brookdale Drive or Noble Ave. We do on occasion place the trailer on less traveled streets, but the idea behind the trailer is one of visibility and the reduction of speed where such a reduction would have the greatest impact on public safety. For that reason we typically do not place the S.M.A.R.T trailer on streets which end in a cul-de-sac, dead end or traffic flow which is too small to be of consequence.
The S.M.A.R.T trailer is typically deployed between April and November, when there is no snow on the ground and minimal chance of thunderstorm activity. It is usually deployed in the morning between 6 AM and 8 AM and removed between 8PM and 10 PM. Deployment is handled by Community Service Officers and Police Cadets.
The S.M.A.R.T trailer itself is powered by solar energy with battery back up. It is on a planned 20 year replacement cycle and costs the taxpayers about $2.35 each day.
