Adopt A Park

What is Adopt-A-Park?
It's a program for volunteers to help keep parks beautiful in Brooklyn
Park. Adopt-A-Park is a fun, educational and worthwhile program
that will provide your organization, company or family with the
opportunity to make our parks even more safe and beautiful than
they already are!

You can clean up and beautify a park or a stretch of trail with the cooperation of the Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Advisory Commission and Parks staff. This is a great way to promote civic responsibility and generate community pride!

Our Commitment

  • We provide bags and dispose of the trash you collect
  • A Certificate of Appreciation presented at a City Council meeting

Your Commitment

  • Pick up litter in and around your adopted site at least twice per month
  • Responsibilities will include picking up paper, cans, glass (broken glass to be removed at the discretion of the group supervisor), other garbage and placing it in trash bags at the park or trail at a designated location
  • You are welcome to plant flowers; however, if you do, you must continue to maintain them until the end of the season by weeding and watering

Who can participate?

  • Individuals/families
  • Community organizations, schools and churches
  • Neighborhoods
  • Service Clubs
  • Youth groups
  • Businesses
  • Schools

Tips For Success

  • Plan accordingly - the city garbage collection at park locations is scheduled to occur on Mondays and Fridays
  • Plan the day with plenty of time for breaks so participants don't over-exert themselves
  • Whenever something out of the ordinary is observed, such as vandalism or potential safety hazards, please notify the Recreation and Parks Department immediately
  • Have a first aid kit on hand and be aware of local emergency services in case of injury

VandalismVandalism is a serious and expensive crime that continues to occur in neighborhood parks.

If you witness vandalism
call 911 immediately!

 Safety

  • The program depends upon the common sense and responsibility of individual participants
  • No power tools such as lawn mowers, tractors or chain saws are permitted to be used by volunteers
  • Participants shall hold the city harmless for injury or property damage that might have been prevented by their actions

Why Be Involved? Litter destroys the natural aesthetics of any city, no matter how beautiful the parks. It is also very expensive cleaned up. Adopt-A-Park is a program that matches volunteers with specific parks to reduce litter and improve the appearance of these areas. Although the program focuses on picking up litter, you can also participate in additional projects. These projects would need to be reviewed and approved but could include such things as planting trees, removing graffiti and planting and maintaining flowers. A litter-free community is satisfying to residents. It is also inviting to visitors and prospective new citizens and businesses. By helping keep city parks attractive and free of litter everyone who participates feels ownership and a sense of pride in the community.
