The Budget Advisory Commission is an on-going, citizen-led commission called to design and propose budgetary suggestions to the City Council reflecting the input and priorities of the residents of Brooklyn Park.
Members: Nine citizens, one Staff Liaison, one City Council Liaison
Term: Three years
Meets:
4th Tuesday of the month - August through May 7:00 p.m.
Approximate time commitment: 4-6 hours per month
Brooklyn Park is governed by the City Charter, which is the “constitution” of the city. This commission reviews the City Charter, proposes changes and makes recommendations to the City Council as needed. The Chief Judge of Hennepin County District Court makes appointments.
Members: 11 citizens, one Staff Liaison, one City Council Liaison
Term: Four years
Meets: 2nd Wednesday of every month, 7:30 p.m.
Citizen Long-range Improvement Committee
CLIC studies all improvements concerning the present and future needs and requirements of the city where public funds and/or collected fees are or will be involved.
Members: 15 citizens, one Staff Liaison, one City Council Liaison
Terms: Three years
Meets: 2nd Thursday of every month, 7:00 p.m.
The Human Rights Commission seeks to ensure equal opportunity in employment, housing, public accommodations, public services and education. It assists the Minnesota Department of Human Rights in implementing state laws against discrimination and advises the City Council on long-range programs to ensure that human service needs are met.
Members: Nine citizens, one Staff Liaison, one City Council Liaison

Approximate time commitment: 2-5 hours per month
Recreation and Parks Advisory Commission
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission studies issues relative to public parks and recreation.
Members: 12 citizens, one Staff Liaison, one Planning Commission Liaison, one City Council Liaison
Terms: Three years
Meets: 3rd Wednesday of every month, 7:00 p.m.
Approximate time commitment: 2-3 hours per month
The Planning Commission holds public hearings on a wide variety of development issues, including zoning, platting, conditional use permits and variances. In addition, it develops long-range plans to guide the physical development of the community through a comprehensive planning process.
Members: Nine citizens, one Staff Liaison, one City Council Liaison

Meets: 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month, 7:00 p.m.
Northwest Suburbs Cable Communications Commission
The Northwest Suburbs Cable Commission is the regulatory agency for the cable franchise for the nine northwest suburbs in the commission; i.e., Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Crystal, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, New Hope, Osseo, Plymouth and Robbinsdale. The NW Suburbs Cable Communications Commission requires that a Council member and another representative be appointed to the commission.
Members: One citizen representative, one staff or Council representative
Term: One year
Meets: 3rd Thursday of the month, 7:30 - 9:00 a.m., as needed
Approximate time commitment: 6-12 meetings per year
Shingle Creek and West Mississippi Watershed Management Commissions
Nine cities with land in the Shingle Creek watershed (Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Crystal, Maple Grove, Minneapolis, New Hope, Osseo, Plymouth and Robbinsdale) and five cities with land in the West Mississippi watershed (Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Champlin, Maple Grove, and Osseo) entered into Joint Powers Agreements (JPA) to form watershed management organizations that are charged with certain surface and groundwater management functions.
Members: One citizen representative, one alternate citizen representative (representatives may serve on one or both commissions)
Term: Three years
Meets: 2nd Thursday of each month. The Shingle Creek meeting begins at 12:45 p.m. and the West Mississippi meeting follows.
Approximate time commitment: 12 meetings per year
Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council
The purpose of the Advisory Commission shall be to advise the Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council (NWHHSC) regarding human services matters and to perform various duties and assume responsibilities delegated to it by the Board of Directors. Additional purposes of the Advisory Commission are to convey the work of the Advisory Commission back to the member cities of NWHHSC and to share human service issues with the County.
Members: Two citizen representatives
Term: Two years
Meets: 3rd Thursday of the month (10 times per year) from 7:00-9:00 p.m., 6120 Earle Brown Drive, Brooklyn Center
Approximate time commitment: 10 meetings per year
