Support Services Division

The Support Services Division of the Brooklyn Park Police Department consists of the clerical, property and evidence, transcription and records management functions. The clerical staff handles the daily processing of all records. The clerical staff enters all arrest and property information onto the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) so that it is transmitted in a timely fashion and the information can be included in annual statistics which the State publishes.  Clerical staff is required to read each and every report that is processed and code appropriately based upon Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) standards.

Officers responding to calls in Brooklyn Park are required to write a report for each incident.  They currently dictate their reports into a digital dictation system using either a land-line telephone or a hand-held microphone available in their squad car.  Transcriptionists then transcribe the reports directly into the Department's Records Management System.  To be a transcriptionist with the Brooklyn Park Police Department, you must be familiar with Microsoft Word and type a minimum of 60 wpm.

The Department also runs a number of criminal background checks for several different purposes. Gun permits are issued and criminal background checks are required. Any potential Police Department employee including janitorial or other staff having access to our facility must submit to a background check.

Another responsibility of the Support Services Division is the maintenance of the property and evidence that the department acquires. Our Department uses a barcoding system to accurately track thousands of pieces of property and evidence.  Each item must be inventoried and retained until claimed by or returned to the property owner, released to the appropriate court, destroyed, or, sold at an on-line auction.  We are currently utilizing propertyroom.com for auctioning unclaimed property as well as property that is no longer needed by the City of Brooklyn Park.  The public is welcome to bid on any item that is located on this website.
