The Investigative/Administrative Division includes:
Adult & Juvenile Investigations
The duties of the Brooklyn Park Investigative Unit are similar to those in other suburban police departments. Investigators spend most of their time investigating felony and misdemeanor complaints by identifying and locating suspects through their investigation if the suspect is not arrested at or near the scene. To build a solid case, it is necessary for the investigator to conduct formal statements of victims, witnesses and suspects.
Additional duties of investigators include preparing and executing search warrants, holding lineups, completing crime scene investigation by photographing the scene, dusting for and lifting fingerprints, and collecting and preserving evidence for court. Assisting uniformed personnel is occasionally required as well as conducting background investigations for liquor licenses, prospective police personnel and handgun permits.
The Brooklyn Park Police have two Detectives assigned to narcotics enforcement. As members of a Hennepin County led Task Force, the Detectives use various methods such as undercover buys, controlled buys, surveillance, garbage searches and other investigative techniques to catch and prosecute drug dealers.
Often described as one of the most challenging and rewarding positions a police officer can serve in, the police department has six police officers assigned on a full-time basis to the junior high and the senior high schools in Brooklyn Park. These schools include:
· Northview Junior High School
· Brooklyn Junior High School
· Park Center High School
· Edgewood School
· Champlin Park High School
A majority of the School Resource officer’s time is spent on school grounds. They perform all police functions including the investigation of crimes. SRO’s serve as a multi- faceted police resource to faculty, students and parents. Brooklyn Park Police SRO’s are known for their effort to be active members and contributors to the schools and youth that they serve.
Hennepin County Child Protection
Hennepin County staff receive and investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect and decide whether on-going child protection services are needed to assure the safety of the child.
Initial reports of child maltreatment typically come from mandated reporters, such as physicians, school personnel and hospital social workers, family members or neighbors. The calls are received by Hennepin's screening staff who decide whether the case should be opened for investigation.
The criteria for investigating child abuse or neglect is set by law. If the allegation does not meet the criteria, no further action is taken. If the screening staff decide to open the case for investigation, Hennepin Child Protection social workers conduct a traditional investigation or work with community agencies to conduct a family assessment.
The Brooklyn Park Detention Center is located in the Brooklyn Park Police Department. This facility is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by five full-time detention officers. The facility can hold prisoners for 72 hours excluding Sundays and holidays. There are ten cells in the detention center for a capacity of 20 prisoners. The dayroom is available for prisoners after they have been in their cell for 24 hours.
Community Notification of Predatory Offenders Living in Brooklyn Park
The Brooklyn Park Police Department is releasing the following information pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 244.052 which authorizes law enforcement agencies to inform the public of a sex offender's release from prison or a secure treatment facility when the department believes that the release of information will enhance public safety and protection.
The purpose of the Safe Streets Unit is to reduce crime through the use of proactive law enforcement and problem solving techniques. The unit is staffed by experienced police officers and their activities are managed by a Police Sergeant. The Unit successfully accomplishes its crime reduction goals by collecting intelligence on current and developing crime areas within the city from citizens, City Departments and the Police Department’s Crime Analyst. Once an active or potential crime “hot spot” has been identified, Safe Streets Officers will aggressively work the area employing proactive policing methods to dramatically reduce or eliminate the threat of crime. The Unit has had great success in capturing numerous dangerous felons and in seizing a significant number of illegal firearms and drugs.
Working with outside agencies, our police department is part of an enforcement collaborative that targets repeat and high level offenders. These offenders often perform their victimization on a regional level, requiring a coordinated regional response. Using special investigative techniques, task force personnel effectively investigate, apprehend, and prosecute some of our community’s worst offenders.
The personnel in this unit serve as police community liaisons to youth and multi-cultural populations in Brooklyn Park. Responsible for the successful development and implementation of the Joint Community Police Partnership and Youth Violence Prevention Initiatives, the Police Community Liaisons work to improve relationships between police and the diverse communities they serve.
