Investigative Division

The Investigative Division includes:

Adult & Juvenile Investigations

The duties of the Brooklyn Park Investigative Unit are similar to those in other suburban police departments.  Investigators spend most of their time investigating felony and misdemeanor complaints by identifying and locating suspects through their investigation if the suspect is not arrested at or near the scene.  To build a solid case, it is necessary for the investigator to conduct formal statements of victims, witnesses and suspects.

Additional duties of investigators include preparing and executing search warrants, holding lineups, completing crime scene investigation by photographing the scene, dusting for and lifting fingerprints, and collecting and preserving evidence for court.  Assisting uniformed personnel is occasionally required as well as conducting background investigations for liquor licenses, prospective police personnel and handgun permits.

Drug Task Force
The Hennepin-Anoka Suburban Drug Task Force began operations in 1990.  At its inception, the Task Force included the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids and Maple Grove.  The City of Anoka joined the Task Force in 1993.  In 1996, the Task Force combined with the Anoka County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit to become the Anoka-Hennepin Narcotics and Violent Crimes Task Force.  The cities of Blaine, Fridley, and Anoka County Sheriff's Office now work with the original agencies.

The Task Force has focused their enforcement efforts on street level and mid-level drug dealers.  The Task Force uses traditional means for the investigation of narcotics offenses.  Methodologies such as undercover buys, controlled buys, surveillance, garbage searches and other investigative techniques are used and have proven to be effective means for accomplishing Task Force objectives.

Gang Strike Force
The Minnesota Gang Strike Force has existed since 1997 as a specialized law enforcement task force that focuses on identifying, arresting and prosecuting gang members engaged in criminal activity in the State of Minnesota and is directed by a fifteen member Criminal Gang Oversight Council comprised of command staff from several local law enforcement agencies across the State of Minnesota including the Minneapolis Police Chief and the Hennepin County Sheriff.

The Minnesota Gang Strike Force has established itself as the lead agency for coordinating responses to gang crimes across the State of Minnesota that maintains a statewide computer system for monitoring the activity of over 9,000 known gang members, provides gang training to approximately 4,500 workers in the criminal justice system each year and has developed a working relationship with communities of color across the State.

The Minnesota Gang Strike Force, since its inception, has made over 3,500 arrests of gang members that were involved in criminal activity, confiscated over 1,200 firearms from gang members and has been responsible for dismantling several criminal gangs in the State of Minnesota.

School Liaison Officers
Four officers are assigned on a full-time basis to the two junior high and the two senior high schools within the City, Northview Junior High School, Brooklyn Junior High School, Park Center High School and Champlin Park High School.  A majority of the liaison officer time is in the school.  They serve as a resource to the faculty, counselors, students and parents.  Each officer makes every effort to be present at school open houses and conferences and is called upon to appear before various committees, civic and parent organizations.

Hennepin County Child Protection
Hennepin County staff receive and investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect and decide whether on-going child protection services are needed to assure the safety of the child.

Initial reports of child maltreatment typically come from mandated reporters, such as physicians, school personnel and hospital social workers, family members or neighbors. The calls are received by Hennepin's screening staff who decide whether the case should be opened for investigation.

The criteria for investigating child abuse or neglect is set by law. If the allegation does not meet the criteria, no further action is taken. If the screening staff decide to open the case for investigation, Hennepin Child Protection social workers conduct a traditional investigation or work with community agencies to conduct a family assessment.
