City Department Services

    

Various inspections and services are performed by different divisions/departments of the City. Inspections are conducted for permits and/or licenses in addition to other functions provided.  A brief summary of some of the inspection services provided by certain decisions/ departments is provided below.

 

Assessing    763-493-8175

The Assessing Division is responsible for setting the value of all property within the City of Brooklyn Park for determining the taxable value of all real property, upon which property taxes are levied for all taxing jurisdictions. The main functions of the Assessing Division are to inspect and review all existing properties and properties issued permits for the current year, updating information in the property database, providing value and ownership information to citizens, developers, real estate professionals and other interested parties and sending current valuation notices to all property owners. The assessing office does not handle special assessments.  All inquiries on special assessments should be directed to the Engineering Division. 
 

Building Division   763-488-6379 

The Building Division conducts inspections involving building inspections, plumbing inspections, heating and mechanical inspections, water and sewer inspections, and interior residential rental property inspections.
 

Code Enforcement & Public Health Division     763-493-8070

Inspections are conducted for food establishments; lodging facilities; public pools; waste haulers; commercial body art facilities; permanent and temporary signs; residential properties for property maintenance, health and safety; and commercial properties for property maintenance, health, safety and city code compliance.   Additional information is available in regards to environmental and health concerns and property maintenance, as well as general ordinance information. The program areas are outlined below. More detailed information may be presented throughout this handbook.

Rental Licensing Division    763-493-8182

Residential rental housing units (townhouse, condominium, double bungalow, residential zero lot line, single family, or triplex, etc.) are licensed once every two years and apartment complexes are licensed annually for a regular license or every sixth months for a provisional license. Inspections are conducted routinely every two years or in response to a complaint. The majority of inspections focus its attention towards mechanical systems, electrical, plumbing systems, smokes alarms and fire issues, appliances, roof, and structural elevations. Please direct questions as follows:
  • Interior building maintenance inspections of rental properties to the Building Inspection Division.
  • Licensing to the License Division
  • Exterior property maintenance, health/housing/safety, and general regulations to the Code Enforcement & Public Health Division.

Police Department    763-493-8220

The Police Department have various divisions that provide services such as premise security evaluations and proactive crime prevention activities. In addition, investigations regarding criminal activities are conducted as necessary to solve and prevent crime. Upon request, a Crime Prevention Specialist will evaluate a property and recommend options to safeguard.
 

Fire Department      763-493-8020

The Fire Department conducts inspections of all new and existing businesses, schools, churches, and public facilities for state and local Fire/Life Safety code requirements. The fire department also conducts on-site inspections for hazardous materials, including flammable and combustibles liquids, fire alarm systems, and fire suppression systems. The fire department also issues permits for the following:

  • Fire alarm systems
  • Fire suppression systems
  • Commercial kitchen hood cleaning
  • Temporary structures (tents, etc.)

The Operations and Maintenance Department can answer any questions regarding the operations and maintenance of public streets, lighting, and utility lines within the public right-of-way. Please direct questions about construction work to the Engineering & Building Department.
