Property Maintenance

One goal of the City of Brooklyn Park is to create a safe and healthful community where everyone can experience a sense of pride and well-being. The assistance of every citizen is needed to ensure safety and improve the appearance of residential and business areas. The support from the community encourages well-maintained properties. The well-maintained properties:

  • Increase property values
  • Enhance the local economy
  • Decrease crime and vandalism
  • Minimize illness and/or injuries caused by hazardous conditions
  • Improve the quality of life

Buildings & Other Structures

All building elevations and structures must be built with high quality materials, be structurally sound, exhibit an attractive appearance, and contribute to the community’s image of permanence, solidity, and visual aesthetics.    The exterior facade, roof, and foundation of a building must be in good repair. A building showing evidence of deteriorating paint or surfaces, broken/boarded up windows, sagging roof, or other property maintenance problems must be repaired or replaced. Building permits may be required for certain types of repairs.

Retaining Walls

All retaining walls must be constructed with a decay resistant material that does not obstruct the natural flow of surface drainage to or from an abutting property. All setback and easement requirements must be met. In order to construct or repair a retaining wall exceeding four (4) feet in height, a building permit must be obtained. Questions regarding building permits should be directed to the Building Division. Please direct drainage questions to the Engineering Division.

Fences

A fence must be constructed of metal, wood, masonry or other decay-resistant materials, be structurally sound and maintained in good condition. In general, the finished side must face outward and the posts placed on the inside. Any visible areas of deterioration must be repaired or replaced. In order to construct a fence exceeding six (6) feet in height, a building permit must be obtained.   No fence may exceed eight feet, six inches as measured from the top of the fence or support to grade.   As part of the business site approval, a fence may be required between adjacent properties for shielding purposes. Fences may not be constructed in the right-of-way or interfere with the natural flow of surface drainage to or from an abutting property. For more information, please see the "Fencing brochure”. Questions regarding setbacks should be directed to the Planning Division. (City Ord. Ch. 152.363)
