Section 8 is a federal housing assistance program funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by local agencies. In Brooklyn Park, the Metropolitan Council Housing and Redevelopment Authority or Metro HRA administers the program.
There are two types of section 8 assistance: Voucher Based and Project Based. Both have the goal of offering affordable housing opportunities to low income renters in order to foster economic growth and provide stability for our communities and neighborhoods. Renters who qualify and receive Section 8 benefits pay 30-40 percent of their monthly income for rent Section 8 pays the remainder.
The Section 8 Program is a three-way partnership between property owners, tenants, and the HRA. Metro HRA has a successful program due in part to the willingness and cooperation of more than 2,000 property owners and managers. Without this participation, the program would not exist.
Renters can call Metro HRA at 651-602-1428 to apply for the Section 8 program. There is a significant waiting list for eligible persons.
