Step back to 1900 and experience the exciting days leading up to Christmas on a Minnesota farm at the Eidem Homestead with all the beauty and fun of a Christmas come to life, as it would have a century ago.
Enter the carefully restored Victorian home and immediately notice warmth and fragrant aromas coming from the wood stove. Costumed volunteers are busy baking traditional favorites such as lefse, krumkake, breads and cookies. Since the farm was owned for more than 80 years by the John Eidem family, the holiday celebrations reflect their Scandinavian heritage.
Visitors can take a winter hayride, watch the woodpile grow as the men keep busy, and try a variety of old-fashioned sleds for fun in the snow. While visiting the livestock, take a moment to look for our Nisse – the elf who lives in the barn and is the guardian of the Farm. He gets a special bowl of rice porridge at Christmas. Meanwhile, a sheaf of grain (Juleneg) is tied to a tree in the yard as a special treat for the wild birds, in true Norwegian tradition.
Old-Fashioned Farm Christmas with Norwegian Traditions is an annual event for the 10-acre homestead, located at the corner of Noble Parkway and 101st Ave N in Brooklyn Park and will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Decebmer 6 & 7, 2008, 1-5 p.m.
