A duty crew staffing model was implemented in July, 2007. Prior to that, since it's inception in 1957, the Brooklyn Park Fire Department had utilized a paid-on-call staffing model where Firefighters would respond from their homes to the fire station and then to the emergency scene. The transition phase between the two staffing models continued until early 2008.
Our hiring requirements, and this web site, have now been updated to reflect the Duty Crew staffing model.
Minimum qualifications have been changed to include Firefighter I certification and EMT-B certification.
With the Duty Crew, Firefighters are able to select times or shifts that they are assigned to a fire station and ready to respond to calls. There are two 3-person crews on shift from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and one 3-person crew on shift from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., 7 days per week. The paid-on-call component still exists, however the number of times that a Firefighter is unexpectedly called to respond from home has been greatly reduced.
Prior to 2007, the paid-on-call staffing model saw Brooklyn Park Firefighters responding to approximately 1400 calls annually. With the implementation of the Duty Crew, and Firefighters now responding regularly to medical calls, our calls increased to 3,355 emergency calls in 2007 - our transition year. In 2008 we are expected to respond to approximately 5,500 calls.
We are one of the busiest non-full-time fire departments in Minnesota.
