Geothermal Rink Project

The City of Brooklyn Park is undergoing a complete redesign of the two ice rinks located at the Community Activity Center (CAC). The improvements will use geothermal heat from the city’s water system to efficiently cool the rinks and heat portions of the building. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2010 and will be one of the most energy efficient ice rinks in the nation.

The ice rink project is part of a larger energy efficiency retrofit project that uses a combination of stimulus money from the federal government's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants, Heritage Infrastructure Funds, sale of bonds and utility rebates related to energy savings. The whole project will pay for itself in just over twelve years.

The project is being led by McKinstry, a national company specializing in energy-efficient retrofits with a local office in Brooklyn Park. McKinstry has provided a guarantee for the total project cost savings which will save the city more than $250,000 per year in utility and operational costs. $60,000 of these savings will come from the changes being made to the CAC ice rinks.

When completed, the rinks will be a model of geothermal energy efficiency for educational and environmental study. To learn more about the project or to feature it in your media or your school, contact us.
