General Information

The City of Brooklyn Park has made significant and valuable investments in public safety.  With 105 sworn police officers and 50 part-time  and full-time non-sworn staff, the department is able to not only provide 24 hour public safety service, but invest in its people and initiatives that reduce crime and improve the quality of life for our residents and visitors.

Demonstrative of this investment was the hiring of Chief Michael Davis.  Hired in February 2008, Police Chief Michael Davis immediately began to institute a strategic vision for the department.  This vision is based on the following three principles:

1. The deployment of resources based on timely intelligence information and accurate analysis.

2.  Continuous engagement and trust building within the community or promote effective problem-solving and crime prevention/reduction efforts.

3.  Effective collaboration with residents, city departments, local schools, community organizations, law enforcement partners, prosecutorial entities, for the purpose of developing and implementing long-term strategies that will reduce crime and increase the livability of our city.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department provides a variety of services to the community including emergency response, calls for services, investigative resources and providing needed documentation to residents. The divisions that provide these services include: Patrol, Investigations, Special Operations and Support Services. Please take a moment to look at the services listed.

Permits to Purchase Handguns - General Applicant Information
Application forms for permits to purchase handguns are available to Brooklyn Park residents at the reception area of the Police facility 24 hours a day.  This form is also available by accessing and printing the links below.  You must complete the form, sign and return to the Police Department in person.  You will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the files.  Click here to download and install a free copy of Adobe on your computer.

State law requires that the police department must approve or deny the permit request within seven (7) days of application.  In the interest of complying with this requirement and maintaining efficiency within the police department, applications will be officially accepted on Tuesdays only.  The seven day period will begin each Tuesday.  As a convenience to residents, we will take applications at any other time but will not take any action on them until the following Tuesday.  Applications must be brought in by the applicant themselves.  Identification must be verified by the staff member receiving the application, therefore, a second party cannot submit the form for another.

Permits to purchase will not be approved to any person where one or more of the statutory restrictions apply. These restrictions are listed on page 4 of the Handgun Acquisition Permit form published by the State of Minnesota. Permits will not be granted if the application is not completed or is found to contain false or incorrect information.

Permits or denial letters will be mailed to the applicants after all background checks have been completed.

Permits to Carry Handguns

The Minnesota Legislature has passed the Minnesota Personal Protection Act, which went into effect May 28, 2003.  The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office will be responsible for issuing all permits to carry a pistol for the county of Hennepin.  City police chiefs will continue to issue permits to purchase handguns for residents of their cities.

Patch Collectors

The Brooklyn Park Police Department will no longer distribute police patches to patch collectors.  Patches are official symbols of the Department, paid for by taxpayers.  The cost of patches, postage and time are prohibitive.  For these reasons, we are unable to honor requests for shoulder patches.
