Description: This crime consists of unlawful entry or attempted entry into a residence, whether occupied or unoccupied, with the intent to commit a crime. This will include all outbuildings located on residential property such as detached garages and sheds.
How can you reduce your chances of being a victim?
- Keep all doors and windows closed and locked. Doors should have deadbolt locks with a one inch throw and reinforced strike plate with three inch screws. All windows should have window locks
- Secure sliding doors by placing a metal rod or piece of wood in the lower track. Make sure it fits snug and cannot be popped out. An alternative would be to buy a Charley bar that attaches to the side frame and folds down across the glass, bracing itself against the opposite frame
- Always close and lock your garage door
- Create the illusion that you’re home by using timers on lights, radios and TV’s
- Make sure to have good exterior lighting. This may include motion lights or continuous lighting
- While away on vacation, have a trusted neighbor collect your mail and newspapers and shovel the snow
- Keep shrubbery trimmed away from entrances and walkways
- Start a Neighborhood Watch to get to know your neighbors and help reduce crime in your neighborhood. Contact the Brooklyn Park Crime Prevention Unit to get started today
- Display your house number conspicuously and have it well illuminated. This will help police and emergency personnel find your home quickly
