Controlled burn in Village Creek Park
May 4, 2018 01:45 PM
The prairie area in Village Creek Park is to be intentionally burned as part of a management plan that has been designed to maintain its health and vigor.
Why should we intentionally burned a prairie?
Historically fires played a significant role in the development and well-being of prairies by discouraging woody plants and weeds from becoming dominant. Because natural fires seldom occur anymore in suburban or urban areas, we must now use prescribed burns to replicate the process.
Date of burn
We are hoping to burn sometime between May 1, 2018 and June 1, 2018. Because conducting a prescribed burn is dependent upon many factors including, but not limited to: wind speed, wind direction, humidity, and precipitation, we are unable to schedule an exact date of the burn.
Concerned about smoke?
Please keep windows shut during these dates, especially when not at home, if you are concerned about any smoke smell coming into your home.
We are trained professionals
Although it has been well documented that fire management is beneficial to prairies, we do not simply light the fire and stand back to watch. We are professionals with extensive experience in managing grassland fires. We use appropriate equipment, proven techniques, and conduct controlled burns to minimize any inconvenience to you.
Goal of the burn
Our goal is to insure the ecological and political success of this project. The area we turn black will come back green and lush during the following growing season.
We sincerely hope you will appreciate this diverse natural plant community as it grows and flowers with renewed vigor.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
