The City of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota is looking for an experienced, skilled and creative communications manager who wants to be part of a driven and dynamic team. Job overview

The Communications Manager is an administrative-level position working independently under the general direction of the Assistant City Manager. The position oversees two full-time staff and one intern.

Primary duties

  • Develop, coordinate and oversee comprehensive city-wide strategic communications strategy
  • Manage media relations for the City
  • Oversee management of the city's website and digital communications channels
  • Oversee content and production of city newsletter
  • Manage the work and duties of Communications Specialists: Graphic Design and Social Media, Digital Media Specialist, and communications intern(s)
  • Oversee marketing and promotions of city and community special events and programs
  • Oversee and coordinate all cable access programming
  • Write speeches and advise elected officials and staff on communications issues/talking points for public appearances
  • Assist with all aspects of coordinating public information aspects in crisis situations
  • Oversee internal communications, including employee events and internal newsletters to staff
  • Manage and oversee communications division budget in collaboration with the Assistant City manager

Minimum qualifications

  • Four year degree in journalism, english, communications, public relations, or related field
  • Four years of highly-related experience
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communications skills
  • Ability to relate to and work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures
  • Supervisory experience
  • Current unrestricted Driver’s License

Desired qualifications

  • Significant media relations and crisis management experience
  • Experience working with websites and social media
  • Experience developing and/or executing internal and external communication strategies
  • Knowledge of branding and marketing
  • Public sector or local government work experience
