Candidates for City Council

Council members serve a four-year term. If more than two residents file to be elected as mayor or council member for each district, a city primary election will be held in August to nominate candidates for the November city’s general election.

Important dates for candidate filing in 2014

  • May 20 - Filings begin for mayor and one council member seat in each district
  • June 3 - Last day to file as a candidate 
  • June 5 - Last day to withdraw as a candidate 

Requirements to be a candidate

  • You must be a United States citizen
  • You must be eligible to vote in Minnesota
  • You must be twenty-one years of age or older upon assuming office
  • You must live in Brooklyn Park for at least 30 days before the election

Filing to become a candidate

  • You must file an Affidavit of Candidacy with the city clerk
  • For mayor, you must have a petition signed by 25 registered voters who live in the city
    • Signatures can only be obtained during the filing dates
  • For council member, you must have a petition signed by 25 registered voters who live in your representative district
    • Signatures can only be obtained during the filing dates
  • You must pay a $25 filing fee in accordance with Section 4.06 of the City Charter

Candidate packets with these required forms are available in the City Clerk’s office at City Hall seven days before the filing dates.

Withdrawing from an election

To withdraw from an election, a candidate has to file an Affidavit of Withdrawal with the City Clerk. A candidate has until 5 p.m. two days after candidacy filing period to withdraw. After that date, candidates cannot file an affidavit of withdrawal. (MS205.13, subd. 6).
